Chia seeds are a hidden gem that I found recently. Apparantly they’ve been used for hundreds of years as a food source! Here is a short list of benefits, for 2 tablespoons:
- 4.4 grams of high quality protein!
- 5 grams of omega-3 fatty acids.
- These plant omega-3’s need to be converted to EPA and DHA by the body, so unfortunately fish oil or DHA/EPA supplements are still the best way to get those.
- They are high in healthy fats, which makes them filling.
- High in calcium, potassium and other minerals.
- For vegetarians, this is an excellent plant based source of calcium!
- 11 grams of soluble fiber!
- Soluble fiber is NOT used as calories, so only 1 gram of usable carbohydrates is present.
- This is a low carb food!
- Slows down digestion, helping you feel full
- Soluble fiber has been shown to lower cholesterol!
- Soluble fiber is NOT used as calories, so only 1 gram of usable carbohydrates is present.
- High in antioxidants
They are extrememly easy to use. WHen you add them to any liquid, they become gelatinous, like boba tea. I add them to my protein shakes to add fiber, protein, and calcium. Also they are delicious. They give it a jelly like feel, and nice little crunchies.
I also add them to oatmeal. You can add them to your cereal, yogurt or fruit smoothie also.
I buy mine off of amazon, here.
