- Guided Imagery and hypnosis. I don’t usually talk much about hypnosis because pre-sleep is really like a hypnotic state, and the whole purpose of hypnosis is to give the patient suggestions that will help to change their “mind.” Well, by doing pre-sleep, you are essentially practicing a form of self-hypnosis. By combining pre-sleep with guided imagery, you can have an extremely powerful effect on your mind. The Guided Imagery CD’s that I recommend have been used in many research studies. They generally consist of an introduction, then a guided imagery session where descriptive words are used to help engage your imagination in healing. This is the classic “now go to a place where you feel at peace, like the beach, or by a stream.” Then the third part is affirmations. Affirmations are short, positive statements like “I am at peace,” or, “When someone wrongs me, I am able to forgive them peacefully.” These affirmations are extremely powerful in changing a person’s way of thinking.
